There was a Petition up on the White House website to stop Horse Slaughter and round-ups by the BLM, but it has been taken down. I have started another one, as detailed below. We need 100,000 signatures by November 26, 2013: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/enforce-public-law-92-195-preservation-and-protection-wild-horses-and-burros-stop-inhumane-blm-round/B3W83v60

Enforce Public law 92-195 for the preservation and protection of wild horses and burros. Stop inhumane BLM Round-ups!

The Wild Horse and Burro Program has not used scientifically rigorous methods to estimate the population sizes of horses and burros: Current BLM Management is using an inaccurate non-scientific Study paid for by Fracking interests.

- Even though the National Academy of Sciences released a report on the Wild Horse and Burro Program wherein they stated there was “no evidence” of overpopulation, the BLM continues to endorse myths of alleged overpopulation.

- Stop the round up, sale & slaughter of Wild Horses on BLM land.

- Stop the sale of Fracking Permits on Public Lands dedicated to preserving Wild Horses and Burros.

- Reform BLM policies to require the BLM to consult with outside expert

A jealous Saudi man divorced his wife after discovering she had kissed a horse when he saw her picture with the animal on social networks.

The unnamed woman said she had published her own photograph while kissing the horse in the Gulf Kingdom, adding that she does not regret what she has done.

“After he saw the picture showing his wife kissing a horse at a farm near Riyadh, the man divorced her,” Sada newspaper said.

“The wife said she is not sorry for what she did and was not upset by splitting from a man who cannot distinguish between humans and animals. She said she is very proud about that picture as it expresses her love for Arabian horses.”

As colder weather approaches, be sure not to forget the most important nutrient for horses: water! Horses need two to three times more water than other feedstuffs. Providing horses with fresh clean water at an appropriate temperature all year long is a great management tool to reduce the risk of colic, maintain healthy digestion, and maintain body condition.

With winter coming, it is especially important to make sure your horses are adequately hydrated. There is a misconception that horses can easily eat enough snow to survive. Don’t be fooled! Melting snow to get to water will take a great deal more energy. Additionally, horses will not readily eat a pile of snow the size of 20 five gallon buckets. (It takes about 10 inches of snow to have one inch of water). Make sure that your horse is getting enough fresh water every day.

The Associated Press reports that a Connecticut court has ruled that horses are a naturally vicious species after a horse named Scuppy bit a boy in the face. If the ruling stands, horses will become uninsurable and compromise the state’s horse industry as well as their horse owners and farmers.

According to court papers, when the boy tried to pet the horse at Glendale Farms, the animal stuck his neck out from behind a fence and bit the child on his right cheek. The court ruled that the injury suffered by the boy was foreseeable and the owners of the farm had a duty to use reasonable care to restrain the animal to prevent injury.

If this ruling stands, Connecticut will be the first state to consider horses as inherently dangerous, said Doug Dubitsky, a lawyer who represents farmers and horse businesses.

A New Mexico company is slated to be the first to slaughter horses for human consumption in the U.S. since 2007 after federal authorities agreed to issue a permit required for its operation.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is close to approving two additional horse-slaughter plants, said yesterday it was required by law to issue the permit to Valley Meat Co. in Roswell once the company had met the requirements. The last U.S. horse-meat plant closed six years ago after Congress banned funding for inspections for such facilities. That ban lapsed in 2011 and measures to renew it are before lawmakers.
