I’ve always been an animal lover and growing up we always had pets. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to some how work with animals. I worked in several veterinary clinics and volunteered at our local animal shelter. Like many people I had watched television programs about humane officers. This really sparked something inside me and I started researching the possibility of becoming a humane officer.
I had applications and interviews as far away as Lake Tahoe Ca. I was interviewed and hired by Los Angeles Animal Control at the Agoura Shelter. However, as luck would have it, I took my puppy to the Humane Society of Ventura County to have him neutered. They happened to be looking for a humane officer. After being interviewed by the staff and governing board I was hired! I’m as excited today about my job as I was the first day I was hired. After six months of training I was awarded my humane officer badge. My training is an ongoing process. I attend many classes to remain current on the subject of animal welfare. This includes animal law enforcement seminars and animal husbandry classes.
I have been with the Humane Society for over five years now. I have investigated thousands of animal cruelty cases. I am currently the only full time Humane Officer for Ventura County. I investigate and site for animal cruelty and neglect. I enforce mostly California Penal Codes and Health and Safety Codes. For example: Hoarding, physical abuse, starving or depriving an animal of food, water or proper shelter or not providing proper veterinary care.
To ensure the best possible care and outcome for the animals I may also work along side with local animal control, veterinarians, sheriff, police departments, district attorneys office and various rescue groups.
As a Humane Officer, I work to ensure the health and wellbeing of all animals, including, horses, dogs, cats, reptiles, birds and livestock.
Although my job is always challenging and can be heartbreaking at times, it is also the most rewarding job in the world. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
